car tyres

We're familiar with car tyres. But do you really know them? Read on to find out more about car tyres.

4 developments in car tyres

From the birth of the world's first rubber pneumatic tyre in 1888 to the present, the car tyre has been born for 131 years! There have been four stages: ① rubber pneumatic tyres ② steel wire radial tyres ③ radicalisation, flattening and tubeless ④ safety, intelligence and green.

The wider the tyre, the better?

The wider the tyre, the better the grip. However, the wider the tyre, the greater the rolling resistance and the higher the fuel consumption. And tyre noise will be higher. Therefore, the wider the tyre, the better it is.

What are radial tyres?

A radial tyre is a tyre in which the weave of the inner ply is aligned at an angle of 90 degrees to the centre line of the tread, resembling the meridian line on a globe. General radial tyres for family cars are the top of the tread is a steel wire layer, the side of the tyre is a nylon cord layer, the steel wire layer of the tread can make the tyre tread is not easy to deform, so as to get a better grip, the side of the cord layer will make the vehicle driving stability is better, while the cushioning of the road is better, relatively more comfortable, but also more suitable for high-speed driving. Nowadays, radial tyres are commonly used in cars. Large trucks with greater load requirements generally use all-wire tyres, while medium-sized trucks, in general, will use bias tyres.

Is a higher tyre aspect ratio better?

The higher the tyre's aspect ratio, the greater the cushioning area of the tyre, the better the filtering of small vibrations on the road and the more comfortable the tyre will be. The thinner the tyre wall, the better the feedback on the road, which is generally used in sports models. In short, the higher the aspect ratio the better the comfort, the better the aspect ratio the better the handling, and you can't have it both ways.

Load index and speed rating

The load index is the maximum weight that a tyre can carry at normal tyre pressure. The speed rating is the maximum speed that the tyre can carry within the specified load. Generally, apart from vehicles used for cargo, the load index is not considered for domestic vehicles, and the speed rating is an indicator that is not considered. For example, the speed rating of the smallest tyre in common use, the 145/70R12, is Q, which is 160km according to the speed register, the domestic highway speed limit is 120km and there is still 40km to go before the upper limit, while most of those equipped with such small tyres are electric cars or elderly mobility scooters, and it is difficult to run at a maximum speed of 120km.
